Privacy Policy

Lumio Notebook ("Lumio", "we") helps you turn lectures, recordings, videos and documents into study notes. This policy explains what data the service handles and where it goes. In short: your notebook is stored in your Lumio account so it follows you across devices, your recordings are transcribed on your own device, and we only process the text needed to generate your notes.
Your account
- To use Lumio Notebook you create an account with your email address and a password, or sign in with Google or GitHub. We store your email, a secure hash of your password (never the password itself), the name on your profile, and the dates you signed up and last signed in.
- We send email only to verify your address, to reset your password, and to answer requests you make. No newsletters.
Your notebook
- Your notes, folders, classes, chat history, flashcards, quizzes and translations are stored in your account's database and cached in your browser on each device you use. Only you can read them: every record is tied to your account and protected by row-level security.
- Audio recordings and uploaded files (PDFs, slides, documents) are stored in a private file bucket that belongs to your account, so they are available on your other devices. They are not shared with anyone and are not used for anything else.
- Uploaded audio is transcribed on your device by a speech model that your browser downloads once; the audio is not sent to a transcription service.
- Settings such as your display name and theme are saved in your browser's local storage.
"Delete all data" in Settings permanently removes your notes and files from your account and all of your devices. "Delete my account" also removes your account and any links you shared. Signing out removes the cached copy from that device. We cannot recover deleted data.
What is sent to our servers
- Text for AI features. To write notes, answer chat questions, translate, and make flashcards and quizzes, the app sends the relevant text (transcripts, extracted document text, your notes and your questions) to our server, which forwards it to our AI provider. We do not keep this text after the response is returned.
- Video links. When you add a YouTube or Bilibili link, our server fetches the video's title and captions.
- Shared notes. When you click "Share Note", a copy of that note is stored in our database so that anyone with the link can view it. Do not share notes that contain private information. Deleting your account removes your shared notes.
- Technical data. Like most websites, our server receives your IP address and request details, which we use to run the service and prevent abuse (for example, rate limiting).
- Usage counts. We count your account's monthly usage by category — minutes of live lectures recorded, minutes of uploaded audio and video, documents uploaded, chat messages, and the number of notes and AI requests (and roughly how much text they contain) — so we can apply the monthly allowance of your plan. You can see these numbers in Settings. We do not keep the content of the requests.
Service providers
- Anthropic provides the Claude AI models that process the text described above, under its commercial terms.
- InsForge hosts the account system, the database and the file storage described above, on servers in the United States. InsForge processes this data only to provide the service to us.
- Google Analytics measures how the website and app are used, as described under "Cookies and analytics".
- Your browser's speech recognition powers live lecture transcription. In Chrome and Edge, this sends microphone audio to the browser vendor's speech service (for example, Google) while you record.
- YouTube and Bilibili provide embedded video players, which may set their own cookies when you play a video.
- Google Fonts, jsDelivr and Hugging Face serve fonts and the on-device speech model files.
- Our hosting provider runs the server.
Cookies and analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand how the website and the app are used: pages visited, features used, device type and approximate location (IP addresses are anonymized). It sets cookies for this purpose. The content of your notes, recordings and questions is never sent to Google Analytics. You can block it with a browser extension or by disabling cookies for this site. We do not use advertising cookies.
Your choices
- Export your notes, delete all of your data, or delete your account at any time from Settings.
- Don't use live recording or AI features with material you are not comfortable sending to the providers above.
- To remove a shared note without deleting your account, contact us with its link.
Children
Lumio Notebook is not directed at children under 13. If you are under the age required in your country, use it only with a parent or guardian's permission.
